Love/Hate

I go back and forth about whether I should love, hate or treat The New Republic agnostically. Often enough I like their coverage, particularly articles and blog posts by Eve Fairbanks, Jonathan Cohn, and Michelle Cottle.

Making fun of Bill Kristol — good.

Claiming that AIPAC speaks for the majority of American Jews — bad.

Every once in awhile, they are fun and snarky and right on the money. As Jonathan Chait was with his recent piece on the ridiculous Obama as Messiah concept. The problem with this conceit, though, is that it has permeated the national consciousness. I find that people who are sort of tepid about Obama, but otherwise Democrats, are quick to say something about how Obama is on a pedestal, and that’s just not a good place for anyone, let alone a politician.
